(Online) Christof Van Niekerk – Blender: An Introduction

DATE:   Thursday, September 22, 2022

FROM:  7:00pm-9:00pm EDT

WHERE:  Online

The Washington DC Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH is proud to present Christof Van Niekerk, founder of Motion Bones studio. Christof will be providing an introduction to Blender, the free and open-source 3D creation suite. The presentation will provide a broad overview of Blender which will cover the user interface, sculpting tools, shaders, rendering engines, and much more.

Blender

Blender is the free and open-source 3D creation suite. It supports the entirety of the 3D pipeline—modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing, and motion tracking, even video editing and game creation. Advanced users employ Blender’s API for Python scripting to customize the application and write specialized tools; often these are included in Blender’s future releases. Blender is well suited to individuals and small studios who benefit from its unified pipeline and responsive development process

The meeting will be hosted on the Zoom platform. A link to the meeting will be provided 5 minutes prior to the presentation to all those who have responded to the announcement on our MeetUp. The link will also be visible to those who RSVP. Those who do not RSVP to the MeetUp announcement will not receive the link to the meeting.

(Online) Genesis of the Story Design Challenge: Inspired by Sound

DATE:   Thursday, June 23, 2022

FROM:  7:00pm-9:00pm EDT

WHERE:  Online

Continuing our Genesis of the Story theme, we would like to propose our second chapter design challenge for 2022 (An announcement was sent to the Meetup group and our chapter members in April). This design challenge was inspired by our very own Paras Kaul. The challenge can be found below the guidelines.

We encourage our members and followers to participate by creating something exciting. The deadline is June 23, 2022 when we will have each participant present then discuss their creations during the scheduled meeting. As an added incentive, anyone who participates in our challenge will receive a complementary 1-year membership to the Washington DC ACM SIGGRAPH chapter. If you are already a member, we will extend your membership for a year.

Guidelines

If you choose to participate, we do have a few rules:

 * No obscene or vulgar artwork.  While we respect the right for artists to express themselves, we have a diverse audience so please do not submit work with nudity or work which is overtly sexual in nature.  Works with extreme, graphically violent acts would also fall into this category.

 * No political or religious artwork.  Again, while we respect the right for artists to express themselves, our chapter cannot become a platform for political or religious agendas.

*  When assets are provided, give credit to the asset provider if you use their asset(s).

*  If there are questions regarding topics or content, please feel free to contact us. We would like to encourage people to express themselves

The meeting will be hosted on the Zoom platform. A link to the meeting will be provided 5 minutes prior to the presentation to all those who have responded to the announcement on our MeetUp. The link will also be visible to those who RSVP. Those who do not RSVP to the MeetUp announcement will not receive the link to the meeting.

https://www.meetup.com/dc-acm-siggraph/events/286530752/

Let us know if you will be participating.

Please join us on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 7pm to 9pm EDT online to see sound inspired creations and to learn some new techniques. We look forward to seeing your creations!

Sincerely,

Washington DC ACM SIGGRAPH

– Paras’s Challenge –

Challenge:  Inspired by Sound

Media: Use the application(s) or medium which inspires you

Record a sound then, use the sound as the inspiration for a still image or animation. How does the sound make you feel? What images or colors does it evoke in your mind? Move beyond a literal recreation of the object(s) making the sound into the realm of abstraction. Explore the realms outside of your comfort zone.

Many famous artists have credited sound and music as a muse for their work. For reference, explore the works by artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Piet Mondrian, Marc Chagall, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and many more.

People have preferences for 2D or 3D so, either is acceptable so long as it conveys your story.
